  1. Pricing

    Focus Law aims to provide cost-effective pricing for legal services. We offer clients two pricing options for the legal services we provide:

    • Hourly legal fees; and
    • Fixed* legal fees for certain simple matters and standard transactions.

      *Whether your matter qualifies as a legal service that can be delivered on a fixed legal fee basis is subject to the sole discretion of Focus Law. Focus Law reserves the right to decline to act on a fixed legal fee basis.

    Fees are subject to change without notice and at the sole discretion of Focus Law.

    Focus Law will require a retainer agreement to be entered into before legal representation commences.

    1. Taxes and Disbursements

      All legal fees, whether on an hourly fee or fixed fee basis, are subject to applicable taxes.

      All legal fees, whether on an hourly fee or fixed fee basis, do not include disbursements or probate filing fees (for probate and administration matters) unless otherwise specified. Disbursements are out of pocket expenses that include (but are not limited to) costs associated with photocopying, scanning, postage, long distance phone calls or faxes, courier charges, transcripts, and/or the engagement of court reporters which may need to be incurred on your behalf depending on the requirements of your legal services.

    2. Payment Methods

      We accept most major credit cards for payment of legal services.

  2. Legal Fees Offered on an Hourly Fee Basis

    Legal Services Hourly Legal Fees

    1. a.   Advocacy services for Wills, Estates and Adult Guardianship matters:

      • litigation involving claims under the Wills Variation Act, claims of incapacity and/or undue influence;
      • passing of Accounts before the court;
      • application for adult guardianship (contested).
    		 $200.00 per hour

    1. b.   Advocacy services for Employment Law matters:

      • negotiations with respect to claims for severance pay;
      • representation at court with respect to wrongful dismissal claims;
      • representation at the BC Human Rights Tribunal
      • representation at Employment Standards Branch mediation and adjudication;
      • preparation of written appeals to the Employment Standards Tribunal.
    		 $200.00 per hour

    1. c.   Advocacy services for Family Law matters:

      • litigation involving issues of custody, child support, division of property, spousal support.
    		 $200.00 per hour

  3. Legal Services Offered on a Fixed Fee Basis

    1. Estate Planning - Will, Power of Attorney, Living Will

      Will – Individual $200.00
      Will – Individual, including trusts for children under 19 years of age $275.00
      Will – Spouses (2 Wills) $300.00
      Will - Spouses including trusts for children under 19 years of age (2 Wills) $350.00
      Power of Attorney for Financial Affairs $200.00
      Representation Agreement (Section 7) – General Powers for Health and Personal Care $350.00
      Representation Agreement (Section 9) – Enhanced Powers for Heath and Personal Care $500.00
      Advance Directives for Health Care $150.00
      Nomination of Committee $100.00

    2. Probate and Estate Administration

      Legal Services Legal Fees
      Basic probate/administration package – preparation of probate/administration documents for submission to the court registry $1,500.00 to $2,500.00 depending on complexity
      Basic probate/administration and accounts for approval by beneficiaries – preparation of probate/administration documents for submission to the court registry, preparation of simple statement of accounts for approval by beneficiaries, and requisite release & consent for beneficiaries $3,000.00 to $4,200.00 depending on complexity
      Accounting to beneficiaries and release – where Focus Law did not prepare application for probate / administration $1,200.00 to $2,000.00 depending on complexity

    3. Family Law

      Legal Services Fixed Legal Fees
      Marriage Agreement or Cohabitation Agreement $800.00 to $1,500.00 depending on complexity
      Separation Agreement $800.00 to $2,000.00 depending on complexity
      Desk Order Divorce – no children $1,200.00 (inclusive of disbursements except for fees charged by the process server)
      Desk Order Divorce – children $1,600.00 (inclusive of disbursements except for fees charged by the process server)

    4. Employment Law

  4. Unbundled Legal Services

    Unbundled legal services include:

    • legal research;
    • drafting of pleadings (Notice of Claim, Reply), affidavits etc...;
    • written legal opinion;
    • coaching for examinations for discovery, mediation, settlement conference, trial.
